Two killed, four injured in grenade attack
An officer and one suspect were killed and 4 seriously injured, including 3 police officers, during the arrest of a man at That Luang Village, Xaysettha district, Vientiane on Monday.
The man pulled out a grenade which he detonated while struggling with police, it was reported. The man was taken to hospital but later died. The injured police officers are in a serious but stable condition in police hospital.
It had been alleged that he was the ringleader behind many robberies.
Vientiane police had arrested a friend of the man and used him to lure the suspect to his home, the detective explained.
When he arrived he was suspicious about the number of people and tried to leave. When police tried to stop him he pulled out a gun and fired and killed the officer.
Police tried to subdue him with a Taser but he did not succumb and pulled out the grenade which he detonated, killing himself and injuring the others.
Head of the 25th SEA Games Security Committee, Brigadier General Toula Inthathilath reported last week that officials were working to provide a safe and secure environment before the games commence in December this year.
He said the committee is cooperating with district and village security officers to investigate suspected troublemakers.
“These criminals continue on a life of crime and continue to be involved in anti-social behaviour such as drug dealing and robbery,” he said.
Brigadier General Toula, who is also Deputy Minister of Public Security believes many of the city’s crime problems stem from criminals who don’t realise the error of their ways and continue to commit crimes after release from prison.
He said a recent crackdown on crime has lead to the apprehension of many criminals in Vientiane .
